Ahhh, I see. Well, my spring hangers are urethane bushed already so they seem pretty rock solid. Even before they were urethane I had a moron hit the side of me pretty hard and it did no harm to the truck at all, just left a wheel print in his bonnet/hood! :-)

Ideas always welcome :-)

YouTube - The state of the diff after about 1km of thrashing

The diff ^ :-)

I tried 5 times to upload the video of actually breaking it, but it kept failing... dodgy connection... so annoying... It's a good vid too, lots of gas brake steer etc.

**** Fred! you did a number on that rear end! No precheck on all the fluids before the maiden voyage after you returned home I see. Did you change the engine oil or are you still trying to burn off the condensation with abuse?

LOL, you got word filtered!

Yeah, no check on DIFF fluids, I checked the engine oil, it had about 100 miles or less on it and was in a pretty dry box the entire time. We WD40ed the bores before turning it over and I'll change it out for some synthetic some time when I'm happy with the lack of leaks, which is currently not the case.

The issue was, 0.5 litres instead of 1.5 litres 4 years ago intentionally due to no seals at the outside of the housing.

I pulled it out tonight....

drum roll...

what a mess! No teeth missing, but the pinion is worn down to sharp edges, maybe an 1/8 of an inch missing. That much is semi expected, but what wasn't expected was the mess the pinion had made of the LSD carrier. Because the pinion is supported by two opposing taper bearings and the front one failed it was not held forward. The consequence was that when you lifted, trailing throttle, engine braking, the pinion shot back and ground the living hell out of the LSD carrier. I'm not sure, but I may have a spare carrier, or I may clean it up a bit. I may need to use a lathe to clean it up properly. I'm not concerned about the strength, just the balance.

Anyway, this week, hopefully, I'll get a 4.1 (stock) head in with a welded centre - locked solid, mig special :-) This will let me wear out the 6 stud wheels/tyres that I have before swapping in the 5 stud disk rear. Once I do that, I'll have to invest in some proper wheels and tyres for the old girl.

More pics and updates as they come to hand :-)

Fred.

I just pulled the diff head apart :

ROFL - all the front bearing rollers are in the bottom of the housing, bar one. The inner bearing casing is half gone and black/blue! The outer one shows a black/blue strip from the heat. The rollers are all rounded over and all but one of them was in the bottom of the housing/sump. The pinion shows heat marks on the one bit that isn't worn completely away. And I took a vid before i pulled the pinion too - clunk clunk :-)

I also just picked up an LSD turbo RX7 rear which is probably 4.1 but has the long snout on it. I need to do some calculations to decide if I can stomach the 4.1 or not and maybe get the driveshaft shortened if I can so that I have the stronger pinion setup. In the mean time, locker for me :-)

I think more oil will be sufficient. If the LSD that I pick up on Monday is a 3.9 then I'll use the long pinion head, if not I'll use the 3.9 short pinion head. Mean while, I'm putting in the 4.1 welded up solid as soon as possible. I have it on a trailer in the drive right now inside the disk brake setup. I need to pull it, weld it and install it ASAP. I also need to pull the box, clean or replace the clutch (already) and fix the massive oil leak/wash up all the oil.

Progress as it comes to hand :-)

Today I welded up an old open diff carrier to temporarily install in a 4.1 head. The 4.1 open head that I pulled out of the new disk brake rear the other day has too narrow a spacer in the middle. The stock courier diff housing uses the centre to hold the axles in one place. My new disk brake rear setup doesn't do it that way, so any centre spacer is just fine. Hopefully I'll have it installed soonish for some more vids and a 225kph run from a stop in a few seconds :-)

The open diff centre that I welded up today was one that spent a lot of time un-oiled and wet. rusty. i wire wheeled it and spun the bearings with a drill/grinder etc and it's all free and smooth and shiny now. I just oiled it after welding it so it will still be that way when i bang it in. nice.

Tonight I attempted to put the welded centre into the 4.1 head that I have. It took ages and I couldn't figure out why it was such a c*nt for a long time. It turns out there are two slightly different head styles!! The pinion offset is a bit different. What this means is that the ring gear is offset differently. What that means is that it is dodgy to use one core in another head because one side will be hanging out pretty far and the other will be recessed. Pics taken... with some luck I'll have it in tomorrow some time. Other than that, I just have to buy a fishing reel and some food/supplies :-)

i know you pretty much had posi before, but we really need a vid from behind your truck when you roll on it at 30k and spin for 300ft

I try not to do too many nice long burnouts on $200usd/tyre tyres. At some point I'll get some cheap stuff on there and do some epic burnouts, all in good time. I promise, I've been working like a n***** trying to get this done before xmas day, and here I am posting about my failure to achieve that at 00:37am on xmas morning. Bugger.

To use the welded centre that I made, I need to use the original housing and swap the pinion etc into it - PITA...

I guess it will just have to wait!

Fred.
