Yes it is a resonator for the air intake that is supposed to cut the noise. Not sure if you've affected the performance by doing this or not. I was considering a similar mod with a cold air intake and no cat exhaust this summer....interesting.

K6 talked about this in a post I made somewhere on here.
We were talking about the cold air intakes i believe, and he said the diameter and the length of the air intake works similar to the exhaust.
If the diameter goes too far one way or the other from the factory size, you will have a loss in torque and HP. I think he said the same goes for the length of the intake as well.
Its just about like a port on a subwoofer enclosure, You have to get the right length & diameter to get it tuned right.
K6 may come back here and help you out on this topic, there is so much going on at this site its getting hard to see all the post any more (thats good for the site) = more traffic!
If K6 doesn't see it, you can always PM him.

I just got a B2600i running and one thing I encountered was the "black box" O-ring that seals it to the aluminum pipe that connects to the throttle body, was hardened and therefore loose in the aluminum pipe and not sealing good at all. I'm sure it was pulling air in around the hardened O-ring and therefore getting air that was not accounted for by the computer & MAF sensor. Picked up a new O-ring just the right size at a hardware store and it made a difference on how well the truck idled. It is no longer pulling in air at that joint anymore!

i wonder.......i never mucked with mine, but if anything in that area is leaking the maf wont read right and the engine will either throw a code or run abit lean, if your gonna remove it just don't damage any of the stock parts so you can put it back if it sucks.

I need to check the factory manual for sure but I thought it had a valve in there that opened or closed it at a certain rpm?

Yeah, I'm thinking it's some kind of intake muffler or something along those lines, it just looks like a sealed box except for the opening that hooks to the intake tube. LOL, when I went down to get R90Baron's truck the guy told me that it cranks up but it won't stay running. I popped the hood and the rubber intake tube is missing, I said do you have the rubber tube that goes between the MAF sensor and the throttle body, cause it won't run without it! It was on the passenger floor and he popped it on there and we fired it up and she ran like a champ. He was dumbfounded, he said, "I didn't know you had to have that on there, I never could get it running!"
