I think they make a balance shaft eliminator kit for it that should help a tiny bit, the engine may shake a little bit though at idle.

They weight a couple pounds and are turned by the engine, balance shafts are usually there for driver comfort to help the engine run smooth at idle. I believe they also have oil pumped through them. So removing them may help with acceleration a little bit because you are removing parasitic drain off the engine.
I'm guessing your truck is a 4x4 in which case it wouldn't be advised to lighten the flywheel. You could have a spare cam sent out for a performance regrind. Given the nature of the truck there isn't much you can do without some rebuild work. Some long primary tube headers could help a little bit, especially in the low end torque range.

a header, and maybe a better air intake system is about all i would do to that truck. that engine is kinda tired so i wouldn't try to squeeze to much power out of it, unless you're going to rebuild it, put in a cam, port it, and maybe a megasquirt with some bigger injectors?

No one makes a header for the 2.6i. You would have to have one custom made to fit. Not really worth the small improvement that you would see. I would put new exhaust on it and open it up some.

it already has the 3 inch intake i got off of u ken and a homemade cold air intake, so take the cat out, a cam, a rebuild and a megasquirt should do the trick

yah its already got crazy flow through those pipes, that cat will help abit, it will get a bit raspy tho, thats how it was before i put the cat in. rebuild, bore it out, maybe bring the compression up abit too, those engines only use like a 8.6 cr factory.

yah, i think thats why mazda's live so long and are so under powered, the trucks use 8.8 and 8.6 (2.6 efi) and even the turbo 12v engine uses 7.8
