Default Custom turbo diesel b2600i 2wd (56k beware)

Hey all, so the wheels were turning in my head today while i was checking craigslist. I have been wanting to do a diesel setup since i first owned my first B but never really had the know how, drive, time, and equipment to do it. well now that i have built my white truck, and being that its quite broken right now and i would like to have a decent daily that'll get good milage and not give me any problems. Well i ended up finding an 83 Mercedes 240D non turbo diesel!!! and i scored it for $250 i checked it all out before buying and it had been left in some alley for about 5 months, so i brought my big set of keys and one worked to open the door and turn the ignition. Bam all the lights come on! well thats a good start, wait for the glow plug light to go out, turn it over and it starts right up! runs perfect, barely any smoke, no weird sounds just the normal diesel marble eater sound so i pay the guy and go get my car trailer to bring it home. Now im just gonna find a cheap ext cab here and drop in the motor. good old mechanical injection so it only uses like 4 wires to run the motor I'm so stoked!!! plus i can sell lots of parts off the car (it had front end damage, hence why so cheap) and i can sell the engine out of the ext cab when i find one. I got some pics and a video of it running for ya'll to drool over

basically the vision i have for this build is a lowered cab plus, some type of chrome steel rims (pathys would be fine, or maybe some of 17" chrome GMC 1/2tons ) with a flat black paint job (im fine with just spray bomb primer, i like that look, and its low maintance) and a nice chrome stack up the back of the passenger side of the cab being that the exhaust already exits on that side too.

oh and the numbers on the engine

2.4L
75ish hp
130 ftlbs
40+ mpg

My sweet car trailer i bought a couple weeks ago

the little oil burner running

car was also an auto so im not sure weather to try and get an automatic truck, or try to find a standard tranny and clutch setup for the motor. its gonna be cheaper to stick with the auto, but i would way rather the standard. i think i could live with it either way

That thing is nice, aside from the obvious of course, I say fix the front end damage and drive it as is, even the interior is nice. I like the idea though, too bad you can't find one of the supercharged F2 diesels.

well the thing is i can find them, theres a few on ebay, i just don't want to pay the 2500us plus shipping and exchange. plus the mercedes diesels last alot longer than the mazdas, and there are alot of local parts for them. the car also weighs in at 4400lbs. an ext cab b2200 probably ways around 3200lbs. trust me, once i get the this in a truck and set it up all properly, i bet i can do it for about 1500 including everything, if i stay as an auto.

Man oh man...please keep us posted on this. I seen your post listing the body and was hoping your were going to do a swap.

While too far into my rebuild to change directions now, a Merc diesel in a Mazda would be great. Even better if I could keep it as a manual trans.

Did anyone notice the Mazda diesel engine on eBay for $2500? A bit steep for me.

my thoughts exactly man, 2500 plus shipping for a bolt in engine that has NO replacement parts locally, and not even known for longevity. the benz's on the other hand last as long if not longer than toyota diesels, and are very common over here, so parts are easily findable if ever needed, oh and heck i found the car for 250 bucks, and i've already sold the rest of the car for 200 bucks, i payed 50 bucks for all the stuff for an engine swap. if i wanted to actually sell all the parts off the car i could made money on it but i have to much stuff already, and the guy thats buying it has a mercedes fetish and said he's got lots of parts if i ever need anything

back to the standard. you ever seen what a mercedes standard tranny looks like? 3 little arms that stick out the side with 3 different rods to a single shifter setup. a really weird, clumsy setup. what i was thinking of doing was getting an adapter plate made, or attempting to make one my self to mate the mazda 5spd up to the mercedes engine/flywheel/clutch. ill be fine with the auto tho, as long as i can set up the clutches in it. i was checking on some big merc forum and supposedly you can adjust the rods to make it shift better and such

i was messing around with it today, let it warm up and i was reading that the factory pump governs the fuel to 5000rpm with no load so its not possible to over rev the motor, anyways i decided to test this out with the car in my driveway, matted the gas and sure enough it revs up and hits a rev limiter. as a nice side note a nice cloud of black comes out at higher rpms i can't wait for that to plume out a nice little chrome stack!!!

some more pics.. pulled the motor out today

i had to buy another hoist cause i sold my last one to RG2200 lol

if anyone knows what this does, i would love to know my self lol. it has the little arm on it and it has a sensor inside it with a 7 wire connector that comes out of it?

free mahi mahi! lol

this had got be one of the smallest trannys i've ever seen lol

nice little oil cooler.

an interesting looking oil pan. i hope it all fits in there. if not ill just make it fit

I really look forward to seeing the step by step process of this build. NOW, go clean that motor. it looks nasty,

thanks man! that means alot i enjoy inspiring people to do builds on there trucks. i find it an enjoyable challenge to try to create something, especially something that i have never heard of someone else already doing. Im sure this might speed MJ along in his build

i quite enjoy building and fabricating something that i have always wanted. plus the sheer cost factor, being i don't have lots of money, heck i don't even have a job right now, keeps me on a tight budget, like most people on the forum. so as i build pretty much anything i only spend what really needs to be spent, or if its a really good deal, ill try to work with that

that small gizmo i was looking at is for the cruise, so ill be taking it off. i do really want to get some sort of a tach setup tho, time to check the ebay world again i wonder tho, as there is a crank sensor on the engine which is used for the cruise, maybe that could be used in someway???

hahaha yes the engine will be getting a good cleaning before it goes into anything, plus im gonna change the front and rear crank seals before it goes into the truck (lol i still need to find one first )

Wow...of the 240D's I've looked at, few if any had cruise.

Curious what the weight difference is between the two engines fully dressed?
Maybe have to crank up the torsion bars some.

You may already know, but two (of many) good sources of parts and help are here:

If it has a crank sensor you could easily set up a digital tach, you could even use something like this http://www.vellemanusa.com/us/enu/pr...iew/?id=350502 I'm sure it could easily be adapted to the crank sensor, since it is merely a simple counter. If you can get me some specs on the sensor I can probably figure out what would need changing, probably just modifying part of the input buffer.

hmmmm i bet its probably about 100lbs more than the stock mazda engine. thats cool tho, its not gonna be a speed demon, and its gonna be low anyways

yah i've already been checking the shop site, lots of good info and diesel nuts over there ill be checking into that source one for sure tho

oh and i found my new truck!!! 91 b2200 cab plus auto!!!!! 1500 on craiglist

the body is nice and strait, a tiny bump in the passenger front fender, the paint is faded and thats it! red out side with the nice gray interior

Stuff a cummins B series in there out of a late dodge ram! Then you can say you have the same turbo as me ;-) Plus it will be more reliable than any diesel that starts with M

Mazda
Mercedes
Mitsubisi

All known for dying very quickly :-(

Isuzu, Nissan, Toyota are decent though :-)

Fred.

Perhaps your tounge in check here, but what do you mean by dying quickly??

Can't comment on the Jap diesels, but the Benz diesels are world reknown for durability and longevity. Plus Mercedes pioneered early development of diesels for use in cars. The OM616 (in this swap), the OM617 and the OM60x series have to be the most prolific models ever made (by anyone) and have millions on millions of miles racked up on them.

Deal, think I'd stick with the Merc auto then...provided it will fit in the tunnel. Also probably be easier to convert stock shaft to accept the Benz yoke and flex-disk.

Dude......that is gonna be sweet! I can't wait to see that booger sitting between the frame rails. I know where there are two old Merc diesel cars right now, just never thought about a possible swap. Hey Ken, you think the factory rearend gearing is gonna work with the diesel? What is the cab-plus gearing compared to the Merc? Being that this particular diesel revs a lot like a gas motor they may be pretty close.
