Power steering worth it? HELL YEAH! Now for the crooked steering wheel...
I just finished my power steering install today, I have to say the mazda community was right. It was worth the bloody knuckles! Only one problem, my steering wheel is off center. I tried dissconnecting the shaft going to the gear box and re-centering the wheel, but couldn't get it to line up with the flat spot on the shaft and the bolt that pinches it. Anyways, I was thinking of pulling the steering wheel off and realigning it that way. Ideas anyone??

I guess that should work, R90Baron can say for sure I would imagine. I wonder if it will alter your blinker turn off feature...... as you come out of a turn and the steering wheel goes back to being centered, will it turn it off to soon or not do it soon enough. There's only one way to tell!

the blinkers align with the steering wheel i believe so you need to have the steering wheel strait for them to work right. you should be able to just remove the wheel and put it back on the way that looks good.

Ya sure the right way isn't to turn both tie rods the same amount? However that's for vehicles already aligned - it sounds to me like you might need an alignment, that the dimensions of the power steering box were a little different, or the wheel would not be off-kilter.

Pull the shaft off of the steering column under the hood closer to the firewall, there is no flat spot to line up there, it is just splined.

I think he should be fine on the alignment if it was good before, then it's still good UNLESS he adjusted tie rod ends or A-arm shims. I think Dealwithit is right, he just needs to re-position the SW AFTER he has the wheels pointing straight forward. I started looking through my photos and it does look like there is a plastic disc with 2 "prongs" that engage in 2 holes in the SW and that disc is what trips the blinker assembly as the SW returns to position after a turn.
Front & center in the pic of the combination switch.

Thanks for the info guys, when I did the swap I removed the manual steering box with the pitman arm attached. Same with the power steering on installation. I did have to swap the cuppling that the steering shaft slides into to the new setup, (splines weren't lining up). Maybe a different spline count? Cusser/Earl, how difficult is iit to pull the steering wheel? Or might try bustedback's idea, dissconnecting the upper part of the steering shaft. Whatever is easiest...

No problem to pull the wheel. a few screws on the back side of the cover, 19 or 21mm nut on the shaft, and a $10 puller.

Problem fixed! It was the 12mm bolt just below the U-joint on the steering shaft. Thanks Bustedback.
